Cacao was already cultivated by the Mayans, and the word Cacao comes from the Nahuatl “Cacahoatl” or “Cacahuatl“, which means ‘bitter juice’ and ”chocolate. The Aztecs are said to have learned from the Mayans, but the Mayans were the first to talk about Xocolatl (now chocolate) and the first to use it to create a delicious water-based drink. This drink included aromatic touches of spices, chili, and cinnamon.

Cocoa was a symbol of luxury and power. As a result of this, it became a currency of exchange, since it was only produced in certain regions of the world. After the conquest of the Spanish, this crop was taken to Europe, where it became famous amongst Europeans.

Today, the largest cocoa production comes from the Ivory Coast and Ghana, which represent 60% of the international production.
