Happy Chocolate Day!

Me + Chocolate = together forever

Is there a person in this world who does not love chocolate? We don’t think so. Since 1995, September 13th has been the day when all choco lovers celebrate. Why? This day was named the Official Chocolate Day in honor of writer Roald Dahl and his artwork “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”.

Did you know that chocolate is of Mexican origin? Yes! Some legends say that the god Quetzalcóatl gave the cacao tree to the natives, and years later, it was baptized as the “Food of the gods”.

We would love to tell you a bit about how it all started. Are you ready?

History of chocolate or cocoa

The cacao tree is a tropical seed, so it’s very abundant in México. Cacao was already cultivated by the Mayans, and the word Cacao comes from the Nahuatl “Cacahoatl” or “Cacahuatl“, which means ‘bitter juice’ and ”chocolate. The Aztecs are said to have learned from the Mayans, but the Mayans were the first to talk about Xocolatl (now chocolate) and the first to use it to create a delicious water-based drink. This drink included aromatic touches of spices, chili, and cinnamon.

Cocoa was a symbol of luxury and power. As a result of this, it became a currency of exchange, since it was only produced in certain regions of the world. After the conquest of the Spanish, this crop was taken to Europe, where it became famous amongst Europeans.

Today, the largest cocoa production comes from the Ivory Coast and Ghana, which represent 60% of the international production. Currently, Mexico does not stand out in the ranking of the main producers.

Who consumes the most chocolate worldwide?

We would also like to give you a key tip to choose the correct chocolate. Health experts mention that healthy chocolates must be made with a percentage of cocoa greater than 70%, since in this way the amount of dairy and sugar is reduced. So don’t forget it; the higher the percentage of cocoa, the less the amount of sugar you consume.
